CrossFit + Pink Shoes= One Badass Filipino!

Hello All! Yes I'm another one attempting to do a blog, documenting my experience as a new member in RFM's CrossFit Ohana.

Just a warning....I'm not as eloquent as Kehau, or as funny as Rod.  I don't even really know what I'm doing here but we'll see how I do.

I guess we'll start my journey with what kind of kid I was growing up.  (and yes it is relevant to me doing Crossfit)

For those of you who know me outside of crossfit, I'm assuming you are laughing right now because in no way does this seem like something I would do.  I was a prissy girl growing up.  I loved playing with barbies and painting my fingers.  I didn't play sports growing up......well actually scratch that I did play soccer and to say the least......I was thee worst player you have EVER seen!  For one I had no concept of team playing...to me it was "just run kicking the ball as far as you can without someone ramming you in the shins with their cleats".  There was little to no dribbling the ball....and foot coordination was a....No!  Oh and one time my dad tried to teach me how to play baseball, but he threw the ball and it hit my face.  I was pretty much done with that sport from that point on.  And that just about covers all my sports experiences.

PE....well PE was another thing that didn't sit well with me.  I would think of ANY excuse to get me out of PE.  Everything from....I'm sick......to I have cramps..to I broke my toe.  Run a mile....No Thank You!  I did weight training in high school but I got by with the bare minimal activity....stretch, crunches, & I even got my teacher to let me "power walk" the mile once.

So now that you know that......why Crossfit you might ask....suicide? maybe.  Actually I thought after 7 years away from my old life as a child/teen....I should step up my game a little.  So I did Zumba...dance exercise? ok I'll try it.  And I loved it.  It was fun, and I loved the results after going for a few months....ok ok.....so just a little heads up....Childbearing has unforeseen catastrophic affects on your body.   And as I have had one child I am very afraid what I will look like after having maybe three....yikes! scary for sure!  So yes results are a must!

My mother-in-law is a crazy workout freak.  And she has seen AMAZING results in her 3 years of seriously working out.  She's the one who found Crossfit.  I had noooooooo ambition to do anything more than "latin booty shaking".   But of course since she joined my husband (Ikaika) had to join too.  Still no desire to join their little crazy group....but then here comes Craig....(my non athletic father-in-law) out of left field saying he's going to join too.  Well SNAP! Since the whole household is there besides me, now I gotta go too.

I'm not going to go into how completely terrified I was to start something this intense because you will be reading mostly jibberish....ummm...reasoning...I'm a little "special" if you haven't figured that out by now.  Honestly I don't know why...I just can't seem to bring myself to type that part of my story.

So anyway, after my first FREE day...not even elements...I was HURTIN! I was praying....lord give me a sign that this is something that I can keep doing.  A few weeks later during my elements period of crossfit...I went to Sports Authority because apparently my workout cloths were not up to my husbands ideal standards.  While I was there looking for workout cloths that I would never consider unless I lost all my body fat....I found my "sign".  The most beautiful PINK workout shoes ever created.  I just had to try them on.  It was like Cinderella! It fit just right and I (of course) bought them.  After that I made a pact with myself that if I had the guts to look this outlandish in these pink shoes at crossfit....I will do everything that crossfit throws at me.  So here I am.....thinking to myself, "what the hell did I get myself into!" But it's been a month so far and I am loving and hating every moment of it.

Thanks for reading! but that's all for now. Peace!

  2. As the little black boy in Hook said, " you're doing it Peter you're doing it". Hahaha. Great job Rikki. I of all people know that crossfit was never on your radar and you would have never pursued it. But yet here you are, another success story and with a strong drive to power through intense WODs. That same drive will help you power through the next 3 years of nursing school. Im extremly proud and love you very much. Ciao!

  13. Hahaha! Chandler you crack me up! yes he was referring to the little black boy in peter pan, the one that carried "Tuddles" marbles. Love that you know the movies lines too. And speaking of someone who is doing a great job and that everyone is proud of......Chandler you are doing an amazing job powering through all the wods! Such a pleasure to have you with us at the gym! Chee!

  14. Rock On Kiddo!! I am so proud of you guys. Yes Cross Fit is a Love/Hate relationship. Hang in there and you will reap the benefits when you need it most.........when you are old. I remember when i left for Navy Dive school. I received one piece of advice: "Don't quit, no matter how bad i gets." Every time i wanted to quit, (like, every day) those words came back and i stuck it out another day. As you stick it out day after day, session after session, you will increase your chances of remaining mobile and sick free. Just don't break any more bones. I have become more emotional in my old age and am not able to maintain my composure as well as i did when you broke you arm after some jerk swept you off your feet with a dog leash.
    Love you
